436 arrested, 9 kg crackers, 38.6 litres of liquor seized by Kolkata Police on New Year's Eve

Kolkata Police made their presence felt on New Year’s Eve with a massive crackdown aimed at ensuring a safe and peaceful night for the city’s residents. In an operation that lasted through the night, the police arrested 436 individuals involved in various unlawful activities. Among those detained were sellers of banned firecrackers and individuals intoxicated in public spaces. A total of 9 kg of banned crackers and 38.6 litres of illicit liquor were confiscated, setting a strong precedent for law enforcement in the new year.

Police officials stated that their aim was to create a “safe and responsible atmosphere” as revelers welcomed the new year. They emphasized that such actions were necessary to curb unsafe practices and uphold the law. "This is not just about celebrations; it’s about starting the year with discipline," remarked a senior police officer.

The Kolkata Traffic Police also had a busy night, recording a staggering 12,188 violations. Among these were 138 cases of drunk driving, 267 incidents of speeding, and 9 cases of mobile phone use while driving. Alarmingly, 79 drivers were caught entering no-entry zones, showcasing a blatant disregard for road rules.

Officials pointed out that these violations posed serious risks to public safety. “Traffic rules are not mere suggestions; they are critical to saving lives,” they emphasized. The police reiterated the need for drivers to respect road safety measures to prevent accidents.

Two-wheeler riders came under intense scrutiny, with 1,834 individuals fined for not wearing helmets. Additionally, 403 cases of triple riding and 1,769 signal violations were recorded. Police stressed that wearing helmets and following signals are non-negotiable for safety. “Helmets are not a fashion accessory; they’re lifesavers,” officials said, urging riders to prioritize safety over convenience.

Beyond traffic violations, the police registered 7,279 cases of other offenses, including driving without proper documentation and illegal parking. They reiterated that owning a vehicle comes with the responsibility to follow all laws, not just for personal safety but for the safety of others on the road.

In a statement to the public, the Kolkata Police issued a clear message: “Be responsible and follow the rules, or face the consequences.” The department stressed that any negligence on the road could lead to disastrous outcomes, not just for the offenders but for innocent bystanders as well. They vowed to continue their strict monitoring and enforcement measures throughout the year.

Kolkata Police’s decisive action on New Year’s Eve has been lauded as a step toward making the city safer. Their vigilance ensured that celebrations did not spiral into chaos, proving that law enforcement remains a cornerstone of public safety in the city.
